This year at a 'Scarlet and Black' party, a model appeared painted as a red and black horned devil; guests drank Raspberry Martinis and artificial red flames shot up five feet. "The dinner dance at the newly restored Windsor Castle, was a fitting culmination of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh's Golden Wedding celebrations and was considered by everyone fortunate enough to be invited, to be a tremendous success.

In the Queen's Guard Chamber, the MacGregor Discotheque belted out the greatest hits of the decade, whilst the 'What Next!' band played classic rock 'n' roll numbers in the Waterloo Chamber - one of the few State Rooms that was relatively undamaged by the 1992 fire.

Despite the grandeur of the guests, it was said to be the most relaxed and informal gathering of royalty that anyone can remember which was exactly what the Queen had hoped for..."
